Neptune was the first planet discovered by observing its motion. Astronomers realized that the orbit of Uranus didn’t quite match the predicted behavior of its known companions, so they guessed that there was another planet out there. In 1846, they spotted Neptune. Credit goes to Urban Jean Joseph Le Verrier, who used mathematics to predict the location of Neptune—taking the gravitational effects of other planets into account.
The planet’s small apparent size makes it challenging to study with ground-based telescopes. However, Voyager 2 visited Neptune and its moons in 1989. Its icy blue surface is reminiscent of Jupiter, with its swirling bands and striped atmosphere. It is the coldest planet in our solar system.
Its rings and atmosphere are made of ice and dust, and its core is composed of heavy hydrogen and light carbon. Its orbit is about 30 astronomical units (AU) from the sun.
Neptune is the second largest planet in our solar system, and it has 16 moons, including the large frozen moon Triton. It is the farthest planet from Earth, and its gravity has the strength of 40,000 times that of ours. Its icy surface has an irregular shape, and its atmosphere is thick and cloudy.
The planet’s name derives from the Greek god Neptune, who is the king of the seas and a protector of sailors. The name has been adopted by many cultures, and the planet is also known as Tangaroa (Mori) or Tlaloccitlalli (Nahuatl). It’s referred to as Dao Nepchun/Nepjun in Thai, and it’s called Waruna in Malay, after the Hindu god of water.
